If I could sum this book up in one word, it would be 'perfect.' It is inexpensive, hardcover, and almost every page has photos! I like that the author provides alternatives and lists pros and cons to each setup, such as dirt floor vs concrete floor. For the actual techniques I will defer to the other reviewers, as I'm not far enough along to rate that.
My 12 year old son has decided he wants to learn blacksmithing and he saved all of his money to buy an anvil and he and my husband built a forge out of an old brake drum from a big truck. He got a hammer, gloves, apron and tongs for christmas as well as this book. He's been pouring over it and has even made a knife (sort of) and some tongs (sort of. He'll get there). But this book has great pictures and instructions. I see him reading it all the time in his room before going to bed.
I was looking forward to this book, '' Backyard" being the key. Unfortunately she glazes over the whole blacksmith furnace thing with barley a paragraph that covers the most important part! The furnace... So we get to see this back yard black smith use 10k of forging equipment and pounding machines. Not for beginners. The part on anvils is helpful, but they should take backyard out of the title and change it to Professional Blacksmith with lots of expensive equipment at their disposal. Meanwhile on Forged in Fire, real backyard blacksmiths are doing things in their backyard with hair dryers and coal boxes..
This is a good book for the beginning smith. Lorelei Sims presents a good primer for the modern metalworker, from assembling a proper shop with tools from yesterday and today, to material choices, to projects designed to help a smith develop his or her skills. Sims particularly focuses on metal art, and this book is a much-needed entry-level book for that field. While farriers, cutlers, swordsmiths, historical smiths, and general repair smiths will find some help here too, this won't be a be-all end-all source for them. Still - a good read, and a good reference for those who want to shape the black metals. The Backyard Blacksmith shows you how -- with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, basic tools, and techniques -- blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges, and handles, and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments. Written by an expert in blacksmith and metal artist, this book provides readers with a basic understanding of blacksmithing, including an explanation of tools like an anvil, an anvil stand, hammers, and tongs. Heating techniques like coal forging and fire tending are explained in detail, along with different types of metal like wrought iron, cast iron, and steel. The Backyard Blacksmith walks readers through step-by-step, illustrated projects including hooks, door and gate pulls, wall-mounted hooks, knockers, racks, and more. These expert blacksmithing lessons come to life with full-color photography to illustrate the steps and provide a better understanding of the text. With this book, beginning blacksmiths can learn to turn metal from its raw shape into something useful and beautiful to behold.
I have really enjoyed the book, but beware it is really only a supplemental reading and should not be taken as anything like a full course in blacksmithing.First of all, I really enjoy the depth that Lorelei does go into. Most basic terms are covered with a sentence or so worth of explanation and she does a good job assuming you know nothing and teaching you from the ground up. The projects in the back are also great practice for the skills that will help make you proficient with your tools. On the flip side of the coin, I sometimes get annoyed with the lack of explanation. I like to know why, and often times she leaves things with a simple once sentence explanation that tells you what to or not to do, but does not go into detail as to why its good or bad. Maybe a brief explanation is offered, don't burn the metal, you'll ruin it, but often times I'm looking for more. What is happening to the metal that is causing me to ruin it?Also, I'd have preferred projects a little more in the direction I want to take my blacksmithing. Basically, if you want to make garden accessories, dinner bells, that sort of thing, this is perfect, if your goal is knives, swords, armor and the like, then this is simply a good starting place to learn terms and basic techniques.
A good intro to blacksmithing. Nothing beats on the job training, but this book will hopefully give you enough insight to get you started. I am surely an amateur blacksmith, I've only made a few things and I learned from a guy with a small backyard smithy. I got the book to learn the more technical aspect and to overall increase my knowledge in the hobby. I have built an anvil stand from ideas I got from this book. I'm currently building my own gas forge. This book does not deal with gas forges all that much. It is mainly focused on old school coal forging. No matter how you heat your metal, the other techniques are still the same.
I bought this as a gift for my dad who likes to dabble in craftsmanship in his spare time. He loved it and said it had a lot of useful, interesting, and unique things within for one to learn, and if the crazy cool stuff he's been making since receiving it has anything to say of it, I have to say this was a great buy!
Majority of the book describes the different operations used in a forge in good detail with accompanying pictures and illustrations. Also contains instructions on making various forge tooling and some beginner projects. It even has a very nice how to on making an adjustable anvil stand. One word of caution though is that the nail header WILL NOT WORK as shown in the illustrations, you will just end up with the nail locked in the header. The hole needs to flare out at the top in order to keep the hot metal from expanding into the extra space in the nail header and locking the nail in.
